If you pop the hood of your vehicle, you’ll likely be able to easily identify the serpentine belt. It’s the rubber belt that runs on the front or side of your engine, generally wrapping around the alternator and other devices. This belt is spun by the motion of the motor and plays a key role in the operation of the engine and many vehicle accessories. As the miles add up, this part will wear down, requiring it to be replaced before it snaps. At Diesel Zone Diagnostics, we see a few common symptoms that it’s time for serpentine belt replacement, which we outline below.

What is a Serpentine Belt?
The serpentine belt, sometimes referred to as the accessory belt, is used to transfer the motion of the engine to other onboard accessories and systems in order to power them. This belt can run components such as the power steering pump, alternator, water pump, auto air conditioner compressor and even the supercharger, if your vehicle is so equipped. Should this belt fail, all of these systems will stop working, generally rendering your vehicle inoperable.

Common Signs of Serpentine Belt Failure
There are a few key indications that it is time for serpentine belt replacement. First and foremost is mileage. In general, an auto manufacturer will recommend that serpentine belt replacement occurs every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on the model. However, you should also look out for these signs of trouble:

⦁ Squealing Under the Hood: If you hear a whine or squeal coming from under your hood, it may be that the belt is slipping or misaligned. This issue can often be resolved by adjusting the tension of the belt, but in other circumstances a new belt is needed.
⦁ Loss of Power Steering: Since the serpentine belt allows for the function of the power steering system, you may find it harder to steer your car if the belt is failing.
⦁ No A/C: Similarly, no air conditioning can be a sign it is time for a new serpentine belt since it powers the air conditioning compressor in your vehicle.
⦁ Visible Belt Cracks: If you open the hood of your car and inspect the belt only to find it has cracks, it needs to be replaced ASAP.
⦁ Engine Overheating: This belt activates the vehicle’s water pump, a primary component of the cooling system. If the belt fails or is weak, you may experience overheating problems.
